A log
My object is a log that my great-great grandmother wrote while living in Worcester, Massachusetts. I got it from my grammy. Her mom’s mom wrote it. The author's name is Helen Meyer, and if she were alive, she would be 125 years old!! I am using this log to learn more about my ancestors. A log is a book recording experiences, or information. The pages are made out of paper, and written on with ink. This log includes notes on my family tree, and has different pages for Helen’s grandparents, and great-grandparents, including if they are married, and (if so) how many children they have. It also includes notes on when they were born, and if they died, when. A note on how the Civil War, and how it affected her is also included.
I chose this object because I think that it’s important to learn about my ancestors, and because I find this log fascinating. When I first picked this book, it was entirely for this reason, but now that I’ve asked a few questions and learned a bit more about the writer, it’s taught me a bit about my culture too. Helen Meyer was one of 9 children, 2 of whom my cousins were named after. She lived in the same house with her husband, Edwin Meyer, for 50 years! Edwin eventually got Alzheimers, which is a memory loss disease. He thought that my grammy was Helen Meyer, so my grammy moved in so that he wouldn’t be frightened. Ergo, my Grammy was now Helen, and her gram (Helen) was her friend. My great-great-grandmother was a very kind person, and that makes me wonder why more of her personality isn’t reflected in the book.
