My grandfather’s family is from a town called Bolechów. The town he grew up in moved around a lot. My great-grandfather was born in Austria, grew up in Poland, then lived in Russia, Germany, and then Russia again, all in the same town! The town is currently in Ukraine. In 1940, the Germans invaded Poland, and my great-grandparents were forced to spend the next three years in hiding because they were Jewish. After the war, my great-grandfather became a well-known lawyer and was very successful. He could even buy an expensive camera (shown here). It was very high tech for the time. This camera was made by a company named Balda. However, the situation for Jews made it hard to stay in Poland. My family decided to leave in 1957, even though that meant they left almost everything they owned behind. Their destination was Israel. They raised their family, including my grandfather, who immigrated to the US. My grandparents still live there now, and so does most of my family, including me!
