This year Packer’s fourth grade adapted the Tenement Museum’s initiative, Your Story Our Story. We approached this work as an opportunity to join a national effort to embrace the diversity of our histories and personal narratives. Students tell the tales of their unique cultural heritage in two different modalities: visual and verbal storytelling. This interdisciplinary approach allowed students to, quite literally, piece together their cultural heritage.
This project was formed and shaped by community engagement. Our involvement is helping to adjust the lens by which we view the stories of cultural identity and belonging in America. Packer’s version of the Your Story, Our Story project is a work in progress.
