The Bible

Relationship: Child of im/migrant

My object is the Bible. It has been in my family since 2004. It is a thick book. It is made out of paper and cardboard. The color of the book is black and on the cover, in golden words, it says “New World Translation of the Holy Scriptures.” The reason why I chose this Bible is because it has been my family’s tradition to read the Bible daily. My Mom and I continue to read the Bible and listening to the stories has become a tradition in our family as well. In addition, I chose this object because my mom took the Bible and the special memories with her when she immigrated to this country. The place she grew up is called Trinidad and Tobago. Whenever she uses the Bible here she remembers using the Bible in her own country.I started reading the Bible when I was six years old. I shared the Bible with my mom so we both read it together. The way I used it was that I took it to church and I sat with the other kids of my age and we read scriptures from the Bible. When I think about this Bible I connect it to my great grandma because she went to church a lot and read the Bible a lot too. This kind of custom of reading and sharing the scriptures was passed down to my grandma and my mom from my great grandma. This Bible is connected to my mother and to me in a special way. Besides that the Bible is also connected to the immigration experience both of us had since we left Trinidad and Tobago to come to this country to have a better life.
