My parents immigrated to the U.S in the 90s.They left behind all of their family and still to this day, are the only ones that live in the U.S. Though I knew my family that lived abroad, I did not have a relationship with them. It was difficult for me to spend time with my family because they were so far away. It was difficult to travel there on a regular basis because the trip was expensive, and being that my parents were immigrants with no help or well paying jobs, they could not afford the trip. My mom worked as a babysitter for a rich family in Long Island, and my dad did electrician work. Before coming to the U.S, my mom worked as the assistant to the Vice Chancellor of a school, and my dad worked on the local radio station. As I got older, I started to travel there more frequently and spent longer vacations there. This was a picture I took during my summer trip during the festivities of the August season. This was the first time I have gotten the chance to experience carnival. With my parents moving to the U.S, that part of their lives became non-existent because they became more accustomed to their American lives. Therefore, it slowly disappeared from their minds. Due to this, they did not expose me or my sister to this culture and I was faulted to only learn it from my school friends, who were also of Caribbean descent. This photo is a representation of the culture that I missed out on, but experienced and have grown to appreciate and love
