The western coast of Scotland and the desolate Hebrides islands are the ancient home of the McDonald family. Their name is derived from the Anglicized version of the Gaelic personal name Mac Dhomhnuill.

My great-great-grandparents, John Lambert McDonald were born August 2, 1896 and DeEtte Louisa Hiatt was born January 17, 1906. John met DeEtte when he roomed in at a hotel owned by her parents Major and Estella Hiatt in Crawford, Nebraska. At that time John was a ranch hand and worked the rodeos after serving in World War I. John and DeEtte were married on August 31, 1921. John and DeEtte lived at the Hotel until after the birth of John and Estelle. They then moved to Spokane, Washington where Major, Charles, and Roderick were born. After leaving Spokane they moved to Clarkston Heights and then on to Lewiston, Idaho. Following that, they moved into Oregon and settled in Burns where Thomas and Beverly were born. John then worked in the lumber mills wherever he could find the work. They worked at Willow Ranch where DeEtte cooked for the farmers and John would work wherever he could earn anything. Nadyne and Hugh were born around this time and Janice was born in Nubieben, California before work came through at the Red River Lumber Company in Westwood, California. This is where the children grew up. However, baby Janice DeEtte died at the age of only 3 from pneumonia bringing much sorrow to the family. The McDonald family then moved yet again to the Sacramento Valley in 1945 and settled in Anderson and Redding where most of the children and grandchildren still reside today.
