In the photograph you see a young woman in a waitress uniform. My mother left her extended family behind when she migrated to the United States in order to be with her child, me. Having no immediate family members as an immigrant she did what many did and worked hard every day. Our family became that of a Female - Headed household. She worked hard to pay rent, childcare, and send remittance back home for her parents who were and are still too old to work. Being the sole provider led to many emotional wounds and stressors for my mother. Due to a lack of another provider in the home I became my brother’s caretaker in order to ease the bills (Childcare) in the household. Immigrant families have a strong bond in working as a collective because we comprehend that the system is not necessarily in our favor.  And we understand that individualism only works at someone else's expense.
