Ellis Island Certificate

On October 7th 2016 I went to go visit my Aunt in Atlanta, Georgia. She had just received a box from a half sibling of things that were my grandfathers who died more than 10 years ago. They were just now cleaning out his things. The box was filled with all sorts of things such as camp photos of his kids, diplomas, certificates, and my great grandfathers Ellis Island Certificate. As someone with a very small family and few stories that go past my grandparents who I never met, this was very special to me. These are the things I learned. On January 15th 1914 my great grandfather Louis Kamisher arrived to America from Russia. He came with his 36 year old wife named Dora with their two children. Louis was 30 years old with blue eyes and brown hair. His children were 1 and 3 years old. Lastly he moved to 147 Essex St. 102 years later his great granddaughter live eight blocks from the apartment my family first had when arriving in America. After 102 years I am back to where it began and New York City has never felt more like home.
