Cornicello

This red horn is called a Cornicello. This was passed down from my grandparents from Sicily to my mother. The horn is supposed to keep away the evil eye, also known as the Malocchio. It is a symbol of good luck and fortune and keeps away evil spirits. This is connected to sociology of the family because it shows how this object was passed down through immigration. It originally belonged to my great grandmother and was passed down to my mother’s father and now she has it and always has it with her. The object is specifically tied to Italians because many of my friends who are Italian also have a Cornicello. Also, I have seen the Cornicello at many shops in Little Italy. It’s very interesting how this one object is shared between Italians all over the world.
